Icertis
AI & Machine Learning Design
During the Summer of 2018, I had the pleasure of working for Icertis as a UX design intern. Icertis is a software company that specializes in providing businesses with contract management software to help identify, assess, and automatically mitigate risk. The Icertis Contract Management (ICM) platform is their flagship product that leverages intelligent solutions for contracts across the entire contract lifecycle.
Role: UX Design Intern
Time: 12 Weeks
Result: Interactive Prototype
Process
My Role
As a part of my internship, I was tasked with exploring new ways in which AI can be used to accelerate the contract creation process within the ICM platform. I led the effort of defining the framework of how AI would interact with the customer and address their pain-points related to manually creating contracts. In addition to formative research, I led the ideation process, created high-fidelity screens, and an interactive prototype.
User Insights & Ideation
To uncover insights and identify user pain points, I partnered with both professional services and the general counsel. With their expertise and relationship with customers, I was able to ensure my designs were aligned with user needs and desires.
Stakeholder Communication
I shared my high-fidelity prototype and design recommendations with senior leadership to highlight how AI can further benefit the contract management process. This helped to gain buy-in and inspire a new way of thinking about contract creation.
Cross Platform Design
My final design took form for both web and mobile devices. I did this to accommodate multiple use cases and have the design meet users where they are at, since business encounters don’t always occur inside the of the office.
What I Learned
Learn the Business
Talking with members of other departments within the company was a great way to fully understand use cases, and the company’s larger vision. This way, I could adequately align my designs with the organization’s goals, as well as the user’s needs and desires.
Tell a Story
To ensure my designs resonated with senior leadership, I had my prototype tell a story to provide context surrounding the interactions taking place. By doing this, I could better demonstrate the value I could bring the company by highlighting how I would solve key user pain points.
Keep it Simple
It’s easy to get lost in the scope of projects that deal with complex enterprise systems. I decided to scope my project to focus on a narrow use case that affects the majority of users. This would ensure that my work could be simplified without compromising the design objective.
